I don’t run in the winter any more, so instead I get off the bus and do a 30+ minute walk to get to work every day. I commute from Aylmer, Gatineau, to Ottawa’s downtown, and I walk from Hull, Gatineau, to Ottawa. I have a couple of bridges to choose from, and it’s a nice short walk. In the winter, dress warm because the wind on the river is deadly.
A few days ago, the weather turned cold. It went from barely sub-zero temperatures and dropped overnight to less than -20c. In Fahrenheit, that’s who cares. -20c is nice and cold. The Ottawa river freezes in parts, but the fast parts never freeze. When there is a sudden temperature drop, the river’s water sublimates directly into a misty frost, and makes a beautiful mist over the water. I always carry my Fuji X30 with me – it’s a point and shoot, but it has some nice features, like a panorama mode.
